Life’s Greatest Moment

Hebrews 3:7-19

What is the single greatest moment in a person’s life? People have different ideas and answers.

  • The day they graduated from high school or college; when they got married; when they made it big financially; the birth of a child/children.
  • Actually, the Bible declares that life’s greatest moment is when a person hears and responds to the call of God upon their life.
  • Abraham was called when he lived in a pagan land.
  • Noah heard the voice of God instructing him to build that boat, that ark in the desert.
  • Isaiah was standing in the temple when he saw the Lord.
  • Saul of Tarsus was on his way to Damascus seeking to do away with the Christians there when he came face to face with God in the person of Jesus Christ.
  • Every one of these had their life changed, their life transformed, their world enriched, their future secured – because in life’s greatest moment, they responded to the call of God in their life.

A right choice.

God’s timing is essential. It is always “today”.

  • Not yesterday because yesterday is already gone.
  • Not tomorrow because tomorrow has not yet dawned.

God’s desire is imperative.

  • "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, v. 7
  • But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," v. 13
  • "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, v. 15

God’s time is now.

  • “Now is the day of salvation.” 2 Cor. 6:2
  • “Today if you will hear his voice, harden not your heart.” 4:7

A wrong choice.

We could miss the opportunity.

“If you will hear…” v. 7 The emphasis is upon the “if” not the “hear”.

We have the idea that we can respond whenever we are ready. That is not true regarding salvation.

John 6:44 "No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him;

God’s Spirit may not always be active in your life.

Gen. 6:3 Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever.

There may come a time when we may seek the Lord and He will not be there.

Isa. 55:6 Seek the LORD while He may be found;

Call upon Him while He is near.

2 Cor. 6:2 behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION"—

An obstinate determination

How do we harden or callous our heart?

  • We do so by never being satisfied with what God has done for us. The “provocation” really means “embittered or bitterness. They kept asking for another sign.
  • He performed the miracle of the 10 plagues in Egypt.
  • He performed the miracles of the Red Sea parting an they marched across on dry ground.
  • He performed the miracles of the cloud by day and the fire by night in the wilderness.
  • He provided manna when they were hungry.
  • He brought them water out of a rock when they were thirsty.
  • He led them through the wilderness.

We are no different: we often say, “If God would just do something special for me, I would believe Him. The truth is that if we will believe God now, we would not believe Him regardless of what He did.

We do so through deceitfulness – “lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Sin lies to us and deceives us. Sin tells us there is a better day coming. Sin tells us that if we just hang on a little bit longer, things will change. Our sins lie to us and deceive us.

We do so through vacillating, by being tossed about, by being unstable, lukewarm, hot and cold, up and down.

Heb. 3:14

For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end;

Any lack of steadfastness is a means of hardening our hearts.

An evil heart.

An evil heart is one that refuses to believe. V. 12

You should therefore be most careful, my brothers, that there should not be in any of you that wickedness of heart which refuses to trust, and deserts the cause of the living God.

(Phillips)

An evil heart is one that is not content until it has dragged others into its sin. (gr. Poneros) He is active in opposing God. His evil operates like a cancer.

An evil heart is so filled with disbelief that it is willing to lead others into rebellion.
